Encaustic is a historical art form used by the ancient Greeks first to waterproof and then decorate their boats.
It is a clear paint medium composed of beeswax and Damar resin (tree sap) and becomes a beautiful coloured wax-based paint when pigment is added. Encaustic medium is applied in hot liquid form and returns to solid state at room temperature.
I love working with encaustic because of the clarity, richness, and luminosity of the colours as well as it’s versatility in being able to shape it through carving or rework it through heat.
